What is breast reduction?
The breast reduction or mammoplasty es un procedimiento quirúrgico para disminuir el tamaño de las mamas. En esta intervención se reduce el tamaño de los pechos mediante la extirpación del exceso de tejido mamario, grasa y piel. Además, se recoloca la areola y el pezón y, si se desea, también se puede reducir el tamaño de la areola.
What does the surgery consist of?
In this intervention se reduce el tamaño de los senos. Para ello se realiza una extirpación del exceso del tejido mamario, así como de la grasa y piel. Una vez se ha realizado esta extracción, se coloca la areola y el pezón en su lugar correspondiente.
En numerosas ocasiones, el cambio de tamaño provoca que la areola quede algo desequilibrada, por lo que muchas pacientes solicitan que se recoloque la misma.

What type of anesthesia is used?

• La paciente debe pasar la noche anterior hospitalizada, pero este ingreso nunca superará las 24 h.
• La duración de la intervención varía de dos a cuatro horas.
Am I the ideal patient?
The ideal patient is a patient who is not satisfied with the size of his or her chest or who suffers pain due to it.
Es recomendable que el paciente que decida realizar esta intervención sea un paciente que tenga totalmente desarrollado el pecho, aunque se estudiaría el caso específico si no es así. De igual modo, no se recomienda que mujeres que pretendan dar el pecho tras su embarazo se realicen una reducción.
It is advisable to perform a mammogram before the intervention and another afterward to avoid future problems with breast pathologies.
What is the scar and the results like?
Existen varios tipos de técnicas, y según las mismas, podemos diferenciar una cicatriz u otra. La cicatriz principal tiene un componente horizontal en el pliegue inframamario. Con el paso del tiempo, las cicatrices terminan siendo simples rayitas blancas que no molestan a los pacientes. No obstante, cabe destacar que existe un tratamiento de aplicación térmica mediante láser para optimizar la calidad de las cicatrices resultantes.

Al día siguiente de realizar la intervención, la paciente podrá volver a casa y se tarda poco tiempo en volver a la rutina, tanto laboral como personal. Cabe destacar que, como siempre, habrá que estudiar cada caso personalmente.
Se recomienda que el paciente que se realice la reduccion no tenga pensado dar de mamar a su futuro hijo. No obstante, el Dr. Weigand debería estudiar el caso y dar un diagnóstico en base a lo estudiado en el mismo.
