What is lipedema?

He lipedema It is a disease suffered by 5% women and consists of an atypical accumulation of adipose tissue that affects the thighs, calves, hips and, in rare cases, also the arms. This pathology especially affects women, only 2% of all those affected are men.

Furthermore, something notable about this pathology is that  never reaches the ankle, but before reaching it it slows down, forming a ring that ends up causing an obstruction.

Likewise, unlike other diseases, this accumulation of fat cannot be eliminated through exercise or a healthier diet; to solve the problem it must be treated by a Lipedema specialist.

When Lipedema evolves it can worsen, becoming lipo-lymphedema, whose symptoms are more similar to lymphedema, a chronic disease characterized by the accumulation of fluid (lymph) in the body's tissues.

Everything you need to know about Lipedema

What does the treatment consist of?

Although we must keep in mind that the lipedema currently there is no cure, it can be improved through surgical treatment with which we will achieve ease the pain and make the disease progress more slowly.

There are mainly two types of liposuction suitable for this pathology, since performing liposuction that is not appropriate could worsen the situation:

Tumescent liposuction

Water assisted liposuction

Types of Lipedema

In Lipedema disease we can differentiate 5 representative degrees of conditions:

  •  Type I: affects the hips, buttocks and pelvis.
  • Type II: affects the hips and even the knees.
  • Type III: goes from hips to ankles.
  • Type IV: the buttocks are also added to the hips and ankles.

In addition to this first classification, we can also classify lipedema based on the clinical stage in which it is found and, therefore, according to the degree of condition:

  • Grade I: It is characterized by orange peel skin and is mostly imperceptible to those who suffer from it, since this type of skin is common in other diseases.
  • Grade II: It is characterized by the presence of dents in the skin and even varicose veins. In this case we can already notice more inflammation in the back of the knee.
  • Grade III: Added to the above is the appearance of flaps.
  • Grades IV and V: They are already considered lipolymphedema since in these stages obstructions occur in lymphatic ducts.

Find out if you are the ideal patient to perform the surgery.

Advantages of surgical intervention

The pain is significantly reduced and in some cases even disappears.

It provides a feeling of lightness and relief in the patient as a result of an improvement in blood and lymphatic circulation that reduces tissue pressure.

The patient gains mobility and flexibility, movements that were previously more limited as a result of fatty tissue.

Greater ease in doing sports without discomfort or pain appearing at the end of physical exercise.

The progression of the pathology towards more advanced degrees of lipedema is slowed.

What type of anesthesia is used?

Anesthesia and duration

The anesthesia used can be both general and local depending on the areas to be operated on and the amount of fat to be extracted.

Depending on the type of intervention and the patient, the procedure may or may not require at least one night of hospitalization.

Regarding the duration of the intervention, it happens as with anesthesia and hospitalization depending on the importance or difficulty, although the operation usually lasts between 2.5 hours or 3.5 hours.

Am I the ideal patient?

The diagnosis of lipedema is mainly clinical and requires a precise clinical examination by a lipedema specialist. Likewise, once lipedema has been diagnosed, it must be established what degree of the disease the patient has. Once this inspection has been completed, the ideal patient is one who wants a quality interventionThis intervention can even be performed by people who have already undergone a previous intervention without putting themselves in the hands of specialists and have not obtained the results they desired.

Risks

Surgical treatment for lipedempa is a safe intervention, as long as it is performed by a specialist. However, and although the incidence rate is very low, as in any operation there may always be complications and associated risks.

Our doctor Weigand, who has excellence in plastic surgery and is among the best plastic surgeons in Madrid, is an expert in specific liposuction to treat lipedema. If you want more information about lipedema or any other treatment, do not hesitate and contact our specialists, we will be happy to answer all your questions and find the right treatment for you.

Frequent questions

We can notice results from the first day, however, during the first weeks we will not be able to observe the final results as a consequence of the postoperative edema, therefore, we will see the definitive results about a month and a half after undergoing the intervention.

This depends largely on each specific case and the extent of the area to be treated. Sometimes 2 or 3 interventions are necessary to achieve optimal results.
